The São Carlos National Theatre is the main Opera House in Lisbon.
It was inaugurated in 1793 by Queen Mary I, to replace the Opera Theatre of the Tagus, which was destroyed during the 1755 earthquake and is a project of the architect José Costa e Silva inspired by La Scala in Milan.
