Alfama is one of the most typical quarters in Lisbon, and it is very much worth a visit to better understand the spirit and soul of the city.
It is located between St. George’s Castle and Jardim do Tabaco dock, with narrow winding streets and tiny alleys, which symbolizes the Moorish influence in Lisbon.
During the Moorish occupation, Alfama constituted the whole city which spread later to the West (Baixa Pombalina area).
It was inhabited by fishermen and poor people, and here you can have a glimpse of lifestyle in an old quarter, listening to Fado and smelling the grilled sardines.
